Another Week!!

It's hard to believe another week has come and gone here in room 1A.  I suppose it was only 3 days long. The kids really enjoyed their LONG weekend and the really short week.

Spelling:

Because of the short week, in spelling the students learned 10 new words this week.  We did not have a spelling test today, but we will have a spelling test next Friday (the 22nd), for all 10 words.  The words are as follows:

about   at   they    was    when    and    come    going    make   my

Language Arts:

This week in Language arts, we continued in group 4 of Jolly Phonics learning two long vowel sounds.  We learned the long ō sound and the long ī sound.  Ask your children what the actions are for these two sounds.  Next week we will finish up group 4 sounds and starting the group 5 sounds.

We also looked at 2 new word families.  We looked at the "et" word family.  Next week we will cover the "in" word family.

We will also be getting into Christmas themed activities in honor of the holiday season.

Math:

This week we continued with representing numbers to 20.  The students were using ten frames and grouping to show numbers from 11-20.  We will continue with this on Wednesday and Thursday nest week.  For our Monday Tuesday math, we will be continuing with patterns and relations.  We have finished up creating and extending patterns and will now be dealing with equal and not equal. Some "I can's" are as follows:

  • I can make two equal sets and show that they are equal
  • I can make two unequal sets and show that they are not equal
  • I can explain how to tell if two sets are equal or unequal
  • I can show that different representations of the same amount are equal
  • I can make or write an equation, using numbers, manipulatives, or pictures to show equality using the equal symbol (=)
Science:

This is a really exciting unit for the students.  We are learning about the needs of animals.  We starting differentiating between living and non living things.  This week was learning about different coverings that animals have (skin, hair/fur, scales, or feathers)  The kids loved seeing different pictures of animals and having that visual to really see the difference.  Next week we will be talking about adaptations and how animals can adapt to their surroundings/ different  situations.

Leftovers:

Today the students created an art project that will be scanned and turned into Christmas cards.  In their kanga pouches went home an order form if you would like to order some cards to send out.  The cards will have your children's work printed on it.

The festival of trees was a great time as well for all the students.  They got the opportunity to sit with Santa as well as hear a few stories and build a craft/Christmas tree decoration.  It was a lot of fun.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and a great week ahead.

Mr. Aasen
