Week of Dec 8-12

Good day all.  I hope everyone is feeling better than I am.  It is a sick time for me and stayed away from the kids today and should be back to work tomorrow.  Just a quick reminder that tomorrow is popcorn day.  We will also be having our Christmas party on Friday, December 19th.  I will send out info for who I have to bring something for our last day of school in 2014.  We will begin our party around 11:30 so the children have lots of time to eat and visit before the movie in the afternoon.

Christmas Concert Info:

All grade 2 students are dressing up in black pants/skirt and a white top for the concert.  The concert date is Thursday December 18th, with one concert at 1:30pm.  The evening concert begins at 7:00pm. We ask that you bring your child to the school at 6:30 where they can head to their classroom.

Language Arts

Spelling:

Our spelling words for this week are as follows;

grass   trunk   truck   flew   flat   class   plate   from   glove   friend

Phonics:

We continue to work on long vowel sounds, now working towards recognizing if a word has a long vowel sound or short vowel sound.  (Kit - Short, Kite - long)

Math

We a will be finishing up our unit on patterns with some assessment being done next week. We have been working hard on showing and representing increasing patterns.  In the Numbers to 100 unit we will continue to work on estimation for the rest of the week.

Science

We are doing really well in our Hot and Cold unit.  We recently did an experiment to show what takes up more space, snow or water.  The students had fun collecting snow and recording the temperature before letting it melt to see what happened.    Some of the students are still having a hard time reading thermometers though and could use extra practice at home.  We look at weather every morning during our morning routine, recording the temperature, but more practice is always an asset.

Social Studies

In social we continue to study the early years of our 3 communities, Meteghan, Iqaluit, and Saskatoon.  We are comparing and contrasting the 3 communities together with our community of Leduc.

Tuesday 2 December 2014

Short Week

Good evening.  A couple of quick reminders for this week.  There is no school on Friday because of teacher P.D.  we also have no spelling test this week.  We will have a new set of words next Monday.

Math

This week in Math, in our patterning unit, we are focusing on increasing patterns.  An increasing pattern is a pattern that increases in size with each additional element.  for example, 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, is a pattern that increases by a value of 3.  A question that arises from this pattern might be "What is the 8th element in this pattern?"  This also will assess their knowledge of ordinal numbers.

In our numbers to 100 unit, we are in the midst of working on estimation.  At this point estimation is still a difficult concept for most students, but we will spend more time doing activities and questions to practice our estimation skills.

Science

In science, we are continuing our hot and cold temperatures unit.  Reading thermometers remains a big part of what we are trying to accomplish in the unit.  This week we will also be talking about many weather terms and definitions that deal with hot and cold, as well as doing an experiment called "The Great Meltdown" on Wednesday.  Feel free to ask your child about the Great Meltdown in our classroom.

Next week I will be sending out a sign up to some parents for our Christmas potluck lunch.  It will be done on sign up genius and if you receive an email to sign up for an item, it will be first come first serve.  I hope everyone has a great "long" weekend.

Week of Nov 17-22

Odds and Ends

Happy weekend everyone.  I hope you are all enjoying some rest and relaxation.  Coming up this week there are a couple of important things due.  First is the orders for Christmas cards.  Our art work has been completed, and if you would like to order any cards with your child's artwork on it, the forms must be in by Wednesday the 19th.  Also, if you would like some shoe boxes sent home for operation Christmas Child, those forms must be in ASAP as the collection for the completed shoe boxes is this week.  Also, December book orders will be sent home on Monday and will be due back on Friday the 22nd, as to make sure there is enough time to receive your books before Christmas.

Language Arts

Spelling:

The spelling words for this week are as follows (long "o" words);

those   low   goat   own   coat   go   hope   sold   over   ago

Writing:

The topic of our writing this month is forest creatures.  Our main focus this week will be using descriptive verbs in our writing.  We have called them "no-go" words.  Instead of using words like go and went, how can we describe how we are moving better?  We can use words such as waddles, skipped, zoomed, etc. All of our writing still revolves around informative and narrative writing pieces, and how we can write them successfully.

Math

We are continuing in our patters unit as well as our numbers to 100 unit.  We wrote a quiz on continuing a pattern as well as creating a pattern.  This week our focus will be on increasing patterns.  In our numbers unit, we will still be doing some work on skip counting, as well as recognizing numbers to 100.

Science

We have began our next science unit, Hot and Cold Temperatures.  Our main focus at the beginning of the unit is learning to read a thermometer.  Any chance you get at home with your child to read a thermometer/ask them what the temperature is, that would be fantastic.  The more practice they get the better.

Social

We are continuing our unit on learning about other communities.  We have looked at the history of Iqaluit and what makes it unique. We have learned why people settled in Iqaluit.    We will be looking at the history of Meteghan and Saskatoon this week and finding out when and why people settled in those communities.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week ahead.

Mr. Aasen

Halloween Week!!!

I don't think anyone is more excited that Halloween is on a Friday than teachers.  As much as it is a wonderful day for the kids and teacher at school, we do not have to see them the next day after they have had all that sugar :)  We can hear all the wonderful stories the following Monday.

Now for some odds and ends.  Just a reminder that we will be walking to Salem Manor for our annual Halloween parade in our costumes.  Please send your children to school dressed up in their costumes.  Also we will be having a potluck lunch.  We will have cheese and crackers, fruit, vegetables, and juice boxes.  It is hot lunch day as well, so if you have ordered hot lunch for your child, they can eat that. They do not have to feel pressured into having the potluck lunch.

Language Arts

Spelling:

Our spelling words for this week are as follows:

wide   mile   line   hide   fire   nice   fine   mind   find   behind

Phonics:

In phonics, this week we are continuing with unit 3, looking at long vowel sounds.

Writing:

In writing there is still a major focus on sentence structure, but now we are putting an added focus on adding detail through the form of descriptive words (adjectives). We will be writing a descriptive piece of writing at the end of the week with a Halloween theme to it.  I have been encouraging the students to describe things using their senses.  What do you see, how does it sound, what does it feel like, how does it smell?  I am seeing some great progress and some great descriptive/detailed writing.

Science

In science, we will be writing our Unit 1, Magnetism, unit test this Thursday.  I think all the students are well prepared and will do very well.

I hope you all have a wonderful Halloween and safe "trick or treating" to everyone.

Also reminders that we have library tomorrow and hot lunch on Friday.  Here is a snippet of how our week is going to look.

Language Arts

Spelling:

Our spelling words for the week are as follows;

save   lake   face   same   gate   rake   tape   sail   paint   afraid

The spelling test will be the regular Friday this week.

Writing:

We are continuing our autumn theme for writing.  This week we are really putting a heavy focus on sentences and what makes a good and proper sentence.  Feel free to ask your children what we have been discussing regarding what every sentence needs. (Beginning capitals, ending punctuation, a who/what (subject) and a doing/describing (predicate)).

Phonics:

We are continuing our phonics unit on long vowels.  To coincide with our "long a" spelling words the first parts of this unit deals with "long a" words as well.

Math

This week in math we will continue with patterns on Monday and Tuesday.  Today we learned what "attributes" are in a pattern.  The students now know what pattern "cores" are (the part of the pattern that repeats) and pattern "attributes" (the "objects" that you see in the pattern.  eg. a square and a triangle).  On Wednesday and Thursday we will continue with representing numbers to 100.  Our goal this week will be able to confidently recognize and identify numbers that are higher than 12, just by seeing them written.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week and see you over the next couple of days.

Mr. Aasen

Tuesday 14 October 2014

Happy Thanksgiving and welcome back.

I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend with lots of family time and time for thanks.  This week is a very short week but there is lots to talk about.

First we will be having an author visit Thursday afternoon where the students will all get to listen to a published author at 1pm in the Gym.

Picture retakes will take place tomorrow (Wednesday, the 15th), and Thursday the 16th for any students requiring.  You will need to bring the sheet with the previous picture proofs on it with the box checked off that says you will require retakes.

Language Arts

Spelling:

There are no new spelling words this week.  We will have a review of the first 5 weeks.

Reading:

Just a reminder to keep up the great reading at home and to bring in the red duotangs when you have accumulated an hour of reading.  Just a reminder that our goal for October is 3 hours.  Also, you can use Raz Kids as a reading option at home.  It is a way for your child to engage with the book they are reading and earn points for doing tests.  When you get to the Raz kids site, you type in eees1 in the teacher username.  Your child then finds their name and types in their password.  They should all know what their password is now.

Writing:

We will continue with our writing theme this week of Autumn.  We will be doing some writing based on the book "The Night Before Thanksgiving" as well as getting into some Halloween themed writing in the coming days.  Our focus is still on narrative and informative themed writing.  By now your child should be able to tell you the difference between an informative piece of writing and a narrative.

Phonics:

Our next phonics unit will focus on Long Vowels.

Math

In math we will be focusing on two different units at a time.  Our Monday/Tuesday math we are working on patterning (creating, extending patterns and increasing patters). This week and next we will be working on pattern cores and how we find the part of the pattern that repeats. Our Wednesday/Thursday math with focus on numbers to 100.  This is an extensive unit where we will begin by identifying and representing numbers.  We are beginning by seeing numbers that are larger than 12, as well we will be counting by 2's, 5's and 10's.

Social Studies

We have just begun our first Social Studies unit.  It is titled "Looking at Places".  We will be looking at different communities in Canada and what makes them unique.  We have also all made our very own "Flat Stanley's" that we will be sending off to other grade 2 classrooms (hopefully in the communities we are studying).  These communities are Saskatoon, Meteghan, and Iqaluit.

Thank you and have a wonderful "short" week.

Mr. Aasen

Week of September 29 - Oct 3

Happy weekend everyone.  I hope the cooler weather has not dampened any extraordinary plans.  It definitely did not hurt our Terry Fox run on Friday, or the Eskimos drubbing of the Roughriders.

There are a few things that I need to mention for this week. Wednesday is our first early dismissal of the year.  The students are dismissed at 2:10.  Please make sure you are there to greet your kiddies :)

Also we will be having a fire drill on Tuesday.  If your kids come home with any questions regarding fire drills or lock downs, please assure them that East Elementary is a safe place for your students to be and the adults in the school will do everything they can to keep them safe.

Language Arts

Spelling:

Our spelling words for this week are as follows:

gum   pot   dust   frog   must   sock   pup   shot   soft   tug

Reading:

I am very happy to see many students returning their red duotangs to show me they have reached an hour or more hours of reading at home.  Again, I would like to see 2 hours of reading by the end of September.  That leaves two days to reach 2 hours.  Keep up the fantastic work.

Monday 22 September 2014

And Fall Begins..

So here we are and it is the last day of summer.  We can't complain about the weather can we.  Those highs of 3 degrees seem like forever ago.  Let tomorrow, the beginning of fall, bring another chapter to our school year.

A few odds and ends to talk about.  We are having our annual Terry Fox run this Friday in the afternoon.  If you haven't done so already, the permission forms need to be returned, as well as an optional "Toonie" for Terry.  For every donation of $2 to the cause, the student that makes the donation will have their name entered into a prize draw on Friday.
Hot lunch orders are also due on Friday for October hot lunch days.  If you wish to make any hot lunch orders, please do so online.  I also had someone asking me when picture retakes are.  They will take place on October 15th and 16th.  If you want your child to get retakes, you must return their previous picture proofs to school on the day of the retakes.  Do not return it before then.  Also a reminder that we have library tomorrow.

Language Arts

Spelling:

The spelling words for this week are as follows;

band   fit   him   tack   sad   list   mitt   have   will   skin

Reading:

I am encouraging all the students to read as much as they can at home.  I encourage you to do the same, giving as much encouragement as possible.  I am going to keep track of every hour that every student reads and we will work to a specified goal of "X"  number of hours combined in the class.

Math

We are continuing to work on addition as well as subtraction and recognizing the + and - signs.  I am working with the students so they can recognize when they make errors and self correct their work.  They are strengthening their addition and subtraction skills by learning new strategies that they may not have used before, or reinforcing old strategies.  Finger counting and using a number line are the most popular strategies.

I hope everyone has a great week and enjoy the beautiful weather while you can.

Mr. Aasen

Monday 15 September 2014

Short Week

Good afternoon everyone.  I hope you all had a fantastic weekend.  There are a few odds and ends that need addressed.

First of all, there is no school this Friday as we have a Professional Development day.  Second, a reminder of meet the teacher night at East tomorrow.  It begins at 6:30 in the gymnasium.  It is a free for all where you go and introduce yourselves to the staff.  Third, is a reminder of library tomorrow. Don't forget those library books at home.

Here is a low down of our short week.

Language Arts

Spelling:

Our spelling words for this week are as follows
let   his   had   ask   old   took   also   sat   fell   get

Our spelling test will be on Thursday this week as there is no school on Friday.  I also sent yellow spelling duo-tangs home with your students.  These duo-tangs will contain the previous weeks spelling test, as well as the current weeks new words and worksheets.  If your child has not finish the work in the work pages, they are to finish it prior to bringing back their duo-tangs on Thursdays.  I would also like them to correct any mistakes they have on their spelling tests, as additional practice will only help them with their spelling.

Phonics:

We finished up unit 1 on beginning and ending vowel sounds. We will begin our second phonics unit this week.  This unit will focus on short vowel sounds.

Writing:

Every Monday the students will be writing in their journals.  These journals are written without assistance to show the progress of their individual writing skills and their improvement throughout the year showing capitalization, punctuation, as well as complete sentences. We are also continuing with the narrative and informative writing styles.

Math

This week in math we will continue with review of single digit addition.  We have played some games of math addition bingo to really get the students engaged in working with strategies that help them to quickly come up with an answer to an equation.  Our goal is to be able to quickly solve equations of single digits as it will be beneficial to solving 2 digit addition equations later in the year.

Science

We will continue with magnetism and exploring magnets for the rest of this month and into October.

Social Studies

I am positive that all the students in the class are able to locate Canada, Alberta, as well as a general location of Leduc on a map.  We have been working hard studying the map of Canada as well, including other provinces., I have introduced the other provinces to the students.  They are beginning to show interest in other areas of the country which will lead into new units we will study this year.

I hope to see you all at our meet the teacher night tomorrow.  'Till next time, have a wonderful week and enjoy the beautiful weather while you can.

Mr. Aasen

Monday 8 September 2014

The start of another fantastic year at East

Welcome back to East Elementary and welcome to my new followers.  What a busy week we had last week with learning new routines practicing some old ones.  It was great to see so many familiar faces. This week we have another busy week, getting right into the nitty gritty.

Agenda:

Again this year there will be an agenda message every day.  It is expected the students take their agenda home and show it to their parents/guardians.  I would like their agendas signed every night.  Inside their Kanga Pouches will also be any important information that needs to be looked at.

Odds and Ends:

This week, I will be sending home book orders.  They are due on Friday, September 12th, if you would like to receive your books by the end of the month.  All the paperwork for online access to hot lunch and milk orders will also be going home, as well as all the papers about your children that need to be filled out.  These need to be returned as soon as possible.  Last week I also sent home a green introduction letter.  On the back was some information that I wanted filled out.  If you have not returned this yet, if you could do so that would be great.

Language Arts

Spelling:

Our spelling words for this week (Sept 8-12) are as follows:
fox  cut  hill  wind (short i- as in a windy day outside)  put  all  moon  saw  tell  new

Phonics:

We began our phonics program last week and in the first unit we are looking at beginning and ending consonant sounds.  We will be finishing up this unit this week.

Writing:

The first unit we are looking at is comparing narrative writing to informative writing.  We have been looking at stories that are related to going back to school and looking at what make them narrative or informative stories.  We will be learning how to write in both of these styles before the end of the unit.

Math

Our first unit in math is a review of single digit addition.  We are remembering strategies and using them to help us solve addition equations

Science

We have started our first unit about magnetism.  We have been exploring what magnets will "stick" to and why.  We are also learning about types of magnets.  As we continue in this unit we will be doing various experiments involving magnets and how they function.

Social Studies

Our first unit in social is a review of mapping skills and knowing where to find our country/province/city on a map, as well as locating directions using a compass rose.

I am really looking forward to this school year.  I have a great group of students and couldn't be happier to be back at East Elementary. Have a wonderful week everyone.

Mr. Aasen

Winter Has Returned

It seems how whenever we hit something new, the weather changes.  When spring hit, the snow came... when May hit, the snow came...  As long as when June and summer comes, snow does not come.  Those will be happy days.  We have some very exciting weeks ahead of us in May.  This week is no exception.

Math

For Monday math, we are beginning our unit on 2D shapes and 3D objects.  We have also finished up subtraction from 12 and will now be doing addition and subtraction to 20.  The focus will be again be on problem solving and having the students solve word problems using learned strategies.

Social

We have a couple of heritage project interviews remaining.  Once those are finished we will be doing some review about groups and brainstorm how groups might have changed over time, continuing with the unit, My Family, My History, My Community.

Odds and Ends

This week is bringing some real excitement for the kids.  As seen with the sheet that went home this weekend, the students are designing a wall tile that will be put up in the hallway at East.  This will be done in the middle of the week.  We also have some students that will be teaching some activities to other students in the school, an activity for Education Week.  We will also be attending the grade 4, 5, 6 science fair on Friday afternoon.  We are really looking forward to this really exciting week.

I hope you all have a wonderful week as well.

In science we are continuing with out "needs of plants" unit.  We have learned about the 4 basic needs of plants as well as the 5 main parts of plants (flower, stem, fruit, leaf, and root).  We have also planted our very own garden so the students can log their observations of the growth of plants from seed.  We have planted peas, cucumbers, sunflowers, radishes, carrots, chives, green beans, and romaine lettuce.
We will be continuing with this unit this week, doing some more experiments, including showing how water is absorbed into a plant, using celery sticks.

Social Studies

Our heritage project presentations are in full swing.  We have finished 7 presentations so far and it is very interesting learning where our friends ancestors came from.  We have a map on our wall showing the distances our ancestors would have traveled to reach Alberta.  The students are amazed at how far some of their classmates relatives have gone to get here.

April Is Upon Us

Good day everyone.  I hope you all have had a wonderful and restful spring break.  I certainly have.  It is hard to believe we are already a week into April, and in two weeks we have Easter long weekend.  We have lots of work to do up to that point though.

Language Arts

Spelling:

This week we have our 5th review test covering the last 20 words.  The words are as follows:

Writing:

We have finished up persuasive writing and our writing this month is going to focus on reporting.  We will be conducting a research project on penguins focusing on finding facts about the animal.  The students will look up all sorts of information about penguins and will write a report explaining their findings. This will also extend our science "Needs of Animals" unit across the language arts curriculum.

Math

We will have a couple more weeks covering numbers to 100 in our "Monday Math".  We will continue with subtraction from 12 the rest of the week.
Our focus in subtraction will be continuing to work with learned strategies that work for the students in order to solve a problem.  The students have done lots of work with word and picture problems and are gaining a great understanding of how to solve these problems, both addition or subtraction.

Science

Before spring break, we began our "Needs of Plants" unit.  We will continue with this unit this week, looking at some more types of common plants and the different parts of the plant.  We will eventually be growing our own plants in the classroom.

Social Studies

For Social Studies, we will be presenting our "Family" projects that were taken home during spring break, as part of our Heritage Unit.  I am looking forward to learning more about all of the students.

I hope you all have a wonderful week!

Monday 10 March 2014

Swimming Time

Hello all.  This week (and next) will be an exciting time for many of the students at East Elementary.  Our swimming portion of Phys Ed has all the students excited.  We (the grade 1's) are swimming at the LRC from 1:00-1:30, Monday through Thursday this week and next. If you would like, you can send an extra snack with your child these days as we will have an opportunity for a snack when we return to the school.  Swimming is a very draining activity and the students are hungry when they return.  As for the rest of the day, it is business as usual.

Language Arts

Spelling:

Our spelling words for this week are as follows:

as, run, who, jump, would

Writing:

For writing this week we are finishing up our second piece of persuasive writing.  We read half of a story called Splat the Cat.  Splat is a cat who will be going to school for the first time,  He is very nervous and trying any and all means to not go to school.  It is the students job to have letters written to Splat convincing him why school is such a great place to be.  Again, this is their second attempt at persuasive writing.  Look for their writing about a T-Rex with an assessment rubric in their agendas by the end of the week to give you an idea of where their writing is at.  When it gets sent home, I would like to see it returned after you get a chance to read it.

The high end of the rubric will show where the students should be at by the end of grade 1.

Math:

In math, we finished our unit on measurement and today went over the assessment together.  I sent it home to show what the students took from it.  We will be continuing with our unit, subtraction from 12, the rest of the week.

Science:

In science, we have just begun our unit on needs of plants.  We have had a brainstorming session about anything that the children know about plants.  They were to come up with types of plants, things that plants require to live, and anything else they could think of to do with plants.  We will be working toward seeing some plants in action as well as growing our own plants in the classroom.  I will keep you posted as well as put up some pictures when that time comes.

Art:

For art, I had the students each create a painted heart (3 different colors).  They each got to keep the top left corner of their own heart.  They then proceeded to trade the other 3 pieces of their heart around the room.  They received a heart piece from three other students in their class complementing and completing their own heart.  What resulted was a very cool heart mosaic.

Odds and Ends:

I will again be away for professional development on Tuesday all day.  Also, please remember to dry your child's bathing suit and towel each night so they do not have to put on a wet bathing suit the next day.  If they forget it at school, well, they do not really have a choice then.

As always, have a wonderful week.

Mr. Aasen

Monday 24 February 2014

Last week of February

Hi all.  I hope everyone is staying warm during this cool down period.  Hard to believe that this is our lest week of February already.  Can you believe, including this week, there are only 17 weeks of school left?

Language Arts

Spelling:

This week we have our 4th review spelling test.  It will cover the following 20 words;

some, did, many, time, there, how, say, each, then, other, we, put, find, want, house, up, out, will, down, school

Writing:

We will be continuing with our persuasive letter to our parents about wanting to get a T. Rex.  It is a fun focused piece of persuasive writing where the kids can come up with crazy ideas for the T. Rex to do for their parents.  One example that the students have come up with so far is that "the T. Rex. can pick up all the smelly dog poo in the yard so you do not have to mom"!  They are coming up with some very convincing reasons to get their parents to buy them a T. Rex.

Word Work:

With it being a review week in spelling, there will not be a word family.  We will continue to do our making words activity.  This activity is progressing very well.  Even though the process is the same each week, they are becoming more and more independent each time, using their prior knowledge of previous lessons to build the words in the current lesson.  They are building their vocabulary and becoming more confident with their letter sounds through this activity.

Math

This week in math we will be finishing up our unit on Addition to 12, as well as our Monday math unit, Measurement.  We will be doing self assessment checklists that show "What Can I Do"?  Look for these in their agendas in the coming weeks.  As soon as we are finished our unit tests, we will be moving onto subtraction from 12.

Science

We are finishing yet another unit in Science.  Our 5 senses unit will be wrapping up very soon.  The students have become very knowledgeable in their 5 senses and can tell what parts of their body they use for each sense. We will also be discussing the Winter Season and how we use our senses to tell us that it is winter outside.

Health

In health we have started our Health and Wellness unit.  We will be looking at healthy eating and healthy activity.  We have started looking at Canada's food guide and the 4 food groups, (Fruits & Vegetables, Grains, Milk & Alternatives, Meat & Alternatives) and ideas of how much we should be eating from each food group every day.

Odds and Ends

I will be away on Tuesday for professional development. This Friday, all swim forms are due back.  As well of Friday, we have a wear PJ day as well as a pancake breakfast served up for all the students.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week.

Thursday 20 February 2014

100 Day!!!

Good  day everybody.  I hope everyone had a wonderful Family Day long weekend.  I sure did with some much needed R&R with my family.  This week we will be celebrating 100 day.  I hope everyone had a chance to come up with a 100 creation.

Language Arts

Spelling:

This weeks spelling words are as follows;

up   out   will   down   school

Writing:

This week we will begin our persuasive writing unit.  Persuasive comes in the form pf a convincing argument for something.  It tells your opinion and tries to make people feel the same as you about the topic.  It gives facts and examples to support your opinion.  On Thursday we will begin talking about persuading our parents to buy a T-Rex for us.

Math:

Over the course of this week and next, we will be wrapping up our unit on addition to 12.  I encourage parents at home to periodically ask their children addition questions that add to no more than 12.

Science:

We are finishing up our unit on senses this week. We have 2 senses left to talk about.  Smell and hearing.  We will be talking about good/bad smells, and we will talk about different kinds of sound (loud/soft, high/low), as well as what we use for these senses.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week this week.  It's hard to believe tomorrow is our 100th day!

Valentines Day this week!!!

Good afternoon parents.  Welcome back after another short week.  We have a couple of busy weeks ahead of us.  A letter went home today regarding Valentines Day this Friday.  There will be a sweet treat for all the students during lunch as well as hot lunch for those of you who ordered.  There will be another letter coming home Wednesday regarding our 100th day celebration that will happen next Wednesday, Feb 19th.

Language Arts

Spelling:

Our spelling words for this week are as follows:

we   find   put   want   house

Writing:

In honor of the Winter Olympics, for writing, we will be doing some Olympic themed writing activities over the next couple of weeks.  We will do some informative pieces, as well as some imaginative work as well.  We are still focused on making sure we have beginning capitals as well as ending periods.

Math

In math we are continuing our Monday math, Measurement.  Our focus today is comparing two items based on area.  For example, (the piece of paper has a smaller area than the desk).  We continue to focus on ensuring we are comparing the two objects to each other, stating both in our comparison.  The other measurements we have discussed and will be discussing are length (longer/shorter), height (taller/shorter), volume (what container could hold more), and size (bigger/smaller).  We will continue as well with addition to 12 over the remainder of February.

Science

We are continuing our 5 senses unit.  We have finished talking about sight and the eye, as well as taste and the tongue, and will be moving on to touch the rest of this week.

Health

We finished up our unit on bullying and we have just begun our unit on healthy eating and healthy activity.  The 4 food groups and recommended servings is the first thing we are discussion and will spend a couple of health classes on this.

Odds and Ends

Again, because the Winter Olympics are on, we will be following our Canadian athletes and cheering them on as best we can, looking at results of events.  The students are really excited to see things as they happen.  I have the results of the Men's moguls event streaming on our smart board at lunch today, and when the students saw that we finished with a Gold and a Silver medal they were so excited.  It is great to see the pride and excitement even at this age.

Also a reminder that next Monday, February 17, is Family Day and there is no school.  Another long weekend.

I hope you all have a wonderful week!

Short Week

Hello Everybody.  A friendly reminder that we have no school this Thursday or Friday.   We are still business as usual for the 3 day week.

Language Arts

Spelling:

This week we will not have a spelling test.  Instead I will give the students 2 weeks worth of words (as next week is a short week as well).  The students will not return their spelling duotangs until next Wednesday (Feb 5th).  We will have a spelling test next Wednesday that will cover the 10 new words they received today.  Please continue to practice the spelling words with your children as this practice will get them very familiar with the words, which are their sight words (word wall words).  The 10 words they received today are as follows:

some   did   many   time   there   how   say   each   then   other

Writing

For writing tasks this week, we will continue to focus on writing sentences.  We will introduce the idea of reading over our own sentences and making our own corrections (looking for capital letters at the beginning of our sentences and periods at the end, as well as adding detail).

Math

We will continue with the concepts of measurement and addition to 12

Science

We have begun our 5 senses unit.  Our focus this week will be on sight as well as taste.

I hope all of the students enjoy their super long weekend and all that the rest of January has to offer.  We will see you in February.

Another Week!

Hard to believe we only have 2 weeks left in January.  Here is an update for the week of January 20th.

Language Arts

Spelling:

This week we will be having our spelling review test of the last 20 words (the last 4 weeks of new words).  The words are as follows:

can, man, love, good, yellow, big, are, home, said, green, of, all, call, your, very, on, him, went, from, made

Writing:

This week we are putting an emphasis on writing informative sentences.  Our focus is on making sure we have detail in our writing, while remembering our capital letter and period.

Word Work:

We are continuing twice a week, making words, as well as our word family for this week is "est"

Math

This week in math, on Monday we will continue with measurement.  We extended our opening lesson dealing with comparing lengths (longer, shorter, same length).  We will continue with addition to 12 the rest of the week, including doubles (4+4, 6+6).

Science

We finished up our needs of animals unit and will begin the "My Five Senses" unit.

Social Studies

We will be finishing up our geography unit, talking about landmarks in our community.  For example, we will be discussing landmarks that we see in Leduc (and Edmonton) that identify the community.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week ahead.

Happy New Year!

Hello All.

It's hard to believe that the Christmas holidays are already over and a week of school has already past.  I hope everyone had some wonderful family time over the break.

Language Arts

Spelling:
The spelling words for the week of Jan 13 are as follows

    on     him     went     from     made

Word Work:
This week our word family was the "all" family.  We also started a program called making words.  At least twice a week, we will be manipulating 5 to 6 letters in a "game-like/puzzle-solving" activity.  The students enjoy manipulating the letters and are intrigued that changing just one letter in the word or changing the order of the letters can create a totally different word. They also like trying to figure out the secret word that uses all the letters in the particular lesson.

Writing:
We are continuing our inform and explain writing prompts.  This weeks prompt was "How to make hot chocolate".

Math

In math this week, we continued working with addition to 12. Our main focus was counting on using a number line.  For example, 5+2.  Find 5 on the number line and count on 2 more.  What number do you get to?
Also, encourage your children to log onto mathletics.ca at home and spend some time every day doing some math problems.  Their log in information is in the front of their agendas.  I have access to all the information and know exactly how they do on each activity.

Science

We are still finishing up our needs of animals unit.  Once finished we will begin the My Senses unit.

Social

In social we began talking about urban and rural communities and what we would see, hear, and smell in these two types of communities.

I hope you have all had a great first week as we have.

Mr. Aasen
